At Chester Polo Club, tournaments consist of two matches on the Friday (semi- finals), followed by two matches on the Saturday (Finals day).
Each match consists of four “Chukka’s” with a short interval between Chukka’s. After the second Chukka, half time is called and “Divot Stomping” takes place- a long-standing half-time tradition. An unknown person will place a silver cork on the pitch and whoever finds it whilst divot stomping with receive a grand prize. Each day guests are also invited to participate in Divot stomping Spectators converge on the field to stomp down the turf that has been torn up by the pony’s hooves. It becomes, without fail, a quite festive few minutes. As spectators reenact the infamous scene from “Pretty Woman” in a stylish array of beautiful dress’ and matching hat.
Other traditions include nominating the Most Valuable Player – similarly awarded as Man of The Match in Football, this award is deemed to be the player who has performed the best throughout the tournament and is decided normally in the final match. It is not just the Players that are awarded for skill though, The Best Playing Pony is awarded to the pony who has shown the best performance of speed and agility throughout the tournament.
