Life’s a beach at Chester Racecourse this Sunday

School’s out and the summer holidays have begun. For families yet to book their annual family vacay, Chester Racecourse has the next best alternative with a staycation on the Roodee.

Families, groups of friends and racing enthusiasts are in for a treat this weekend as the 21st Annual Family Funday fixture comes to Chester Racecourse on Sunday 31st July.

Alongside seven races to entertain the crowds, the Racecourse will be reinstating the pop-up beach, complete with buckets and spades and giant palm trees, on the Open Course and there are a plethora of activities and entertainment to keep young and old alike amused throughout the day.

Over 60 tonnes of sand have been delivered in time for the weekend and there’ll be deckchairs to recline in and while away the afternoon, if you’d prefer not to get sand in your toes!

The car park on the Roodee will be open from 8am and gates on the Open Course are also open early, from 9am. The remainder of gates across the course will be open from 11.30am and the first race commences at 2.10pm.

To support the beach theme, there will be donkey rides, a giant 60ft slide, a giant bouncy castle, bungee trampolines, face painting and balloon modelling, all completely FREE for kids!

Eager to grow the following of flat racing at Chester, there will be junior official racecards available on the Open Course for our youngest racegoers to learn all about horseracing and follow the day’s events.

What’s more, there will be live performances from local dance troupe Razzamataz, famed for appearing on Dragon’s Den and a special guest appearance from local Wirral boys, musical duo -The Mac Bros, who shot to fame appearing in season four of The Voice.

Elsewhere on the course, Racecourse Partners, MBNA will be hosting a junior football tournament in the Parade Ring between Liverpool FC and Chester FC. The action kicks off at 12.20pm and the teams will be looking for racegoers to support and cheer them on before racing starts.

Race Sponsors, The Lowry are bringing their own special guest in the form of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! Racegoers will be encouraged to have their photograph taken with the famous car and share via Social Media using #ChittyAtTheRaces for the chance to win a pair of tickets to the show at The Lowry, Salford in December. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be appearing in the Paddock area next to the Parade Ring.

Last but not least, Merseyrail, Chester’s rail partner, will be cooling racegoers down with complimentary ice lollies around the course – in addition to providing cost saving rail travel home! Look out for their promotional team in various areas of the Racecourse throughout the day.

A day at the races can be fun for all the family and fantastic value for money, with tickets for Sunday starting at just £12 for adults on the Open Course. Children under 17 go FREE on Family Funday and all other racing fixtures during 2016, Get into the spirit of raceday, grab your sunglasses and a picnic and head to the beach on the Roodee this Sunday, for a fabulous day of fun for all the family - there’ll be no need for the wind break!
