23,630 racegoers were geed up for an action packed day of sunshine and racing at Chester Racecourse, as six races entertained the crowds at the Stella Artois sponsored Summer Festival. Both County enclosures, The Winning Post and Tattersalls were completely sold out, with a large number of racegoers purchasing on the day for both Dee Stand and the Open Course.
It was a successful day for Jockey and Trainer team Rob Hornby and Andrew Balding, with winners in the third and fifth race. Tom Marquand also had a triumphant day as he took home his first win at Chester on Northern Thunder in the first race. Successive wins came for Tadhg O’Shea on Ionization, Jason Hart on Blithe Spirit and Martin Harley on Marengo.
Racegoers were given the opportunity to enter a competition to win fabulous luxury holiday for two at the Princesa Yaiza Resort, Lanzarote and hundreds got into the spirit and took part. A gallery of all the entrants is available to view online here. The lucky winner will be chosen on Monday 25 July.
Younger racegoers were treated to activities on the Open Course including a giant inflatable slide, bungee trampolines, a giant bouncy castle and a soft play enclosure, all free of charge. The next raceday is just around the bend, with the 21st annual Family Funday on Sunday 31 July.
Family Funday is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the start to the summer holidays, with beach themed festivities on the Open Course. 40,000 tonnes of sand will be brought in to resurrect the pop-up beach and there will be donkey rides, face painting, the return of ‘Titan’ the giant slide and even live entertainment – all free of charge for kids. It’ll be great fun for all. Tickets are just £12 on the Open Course and children under 17 go free.
Car park gates and pedestrian entrances to the Open Course open early, whilst the main gates open at 11.30am and the first of seven thrilling races will commence at 2.10pm.
