Betway Chester Cup Entries Encourage Richard Fahey to try and win the race!

Among the 66 initial entries for the Betway Chester Cup Heritage Handicap, the feature race of the opening day of the Boodles May Festival at Chester Racecourse, which takes place over three days commencing on Wednesday, May 4th is Quick Jack who was sent off the 4/1 favourite and occupied second place behind Trip To Paris in the 2015 renewal of the historic stayers handicap before going on to win the Galway Hurdle.

The seven-year-old is trained in county Meath by Tony Martin, who said:  “He is alright, he ran at Cork last month where the ground was heavy.  I’m quite happy with him and he’ll definitely improve for the run.  The intention is to run at Chester, it’s only three weeks away.
“It’s an unusual track, it’s tight but it’s the same for everybody and it’s important to get the run of the race, everything has to go right,” added Martin.

Local trainer Donald McCain has entered three horses and plans to run Sign Manual in a prep race to establish whether he would get in the Betway Chester Cup.  McCain said: “My other two entries are strong possibilities (Venue and William of Orange).  If we decide to run Venue, we’ll probably give him a run over hurdles and William of Orange would go straight there after a winter campaign also over hurdles.

“The Chester Cup is one of my favourite races of the year, it’s one of those long-distance speciality races and I’m lucky enough to have won a couple (Overturn in 2011 and Ile De Re in 2012, when Overturn finished second).  You never have to convince owners to run a horse at Chester!”

Speaking from his yard in North Yorkshire, trainer Richard Fahey explained: “I’ve entered six horses (Angel Gabrial, Duke of Clarence, Gabrial The Hero, English Summer, Gabrial’s King (4th in 2015) and Gabrial’s Star (5th in 2015) and they are all owned by Marwan Koukash.  As you know he likes to have runners at Chester and we will be trying to win the race!”
There is a possibility of a royal runner as Newmarket based trainer Michael Bell has entered The Queen’s horse Fabricate.  “He was a progressive stayer last year and is due to run at Newbury on Friday.  It will be very demanding there and anything could happen, but he is a stayer with a future.  We’ve had a lot of luck at Chester over the years and it is a lovely track,” explained Bell.
